Bollywood’s Surrogate Mothers: 3 Movies on Surrogacy !

In recent times, Shah Rukh Khan‘s surrogacy controversy has manged to consume the popular imagination as well as the private conversations. With Bollywood endorsing surrogacysurrogacy in India has reached a different level of social acceptability. A medical boon, the concept of surrogacy has lurked within the darkness of mass ignorance, but nothing can escape our Bollywood movies.  So, here present a list of 3 Bollywood movies which deals with issue of surrogacy and surrogate mothers , albeit in its own way 😉

#1   Doosri Dulhan (1983)

https://cinejuana.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/bollywoods-sur…s-on-surrogacy/, surrogacy in india, "a surrogate mother", become a surrogate , being a surrogate , "bollywood movies"

Doosri Dulhan!

This Bollywood tale of surrogacy directed by Lekh Tandon had a young childless couple, Victor Banerjee and Sharmila Tagore, deciding to hire a surrogate mother .  In the the course of the story, a prostitute (Shabana Azmi)  agrees to become a surrogate (who else ?but of course, we are still in the circa 1983!). Doosri Dulhan (meaning ‘the second bride’) in the usual Bollywood fanfare chronicles the journey, dilemmas and insecurities involved in the process of  surrogacy and  surrogate motherhood.

#2 Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001)

https://cinejuana.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/bollywoods-sur…s-on-surrogacy/ ,become a surrogate , being a surrogate , bollywood movies, surrogacy in india, a surrogate mother,

Chori Chori Chup Ke Chup Ke!

This time we have another set of male directors,  Abbas-Mustan, explaining about surrogacy .  A story premise with striking familiarity with Doosri Dulhan and Hollywood’s Pretty Woman, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke has a lovey-dovey childless couple (Salman Khan , Rani Mukherjee) who decide to to hire a prostitute (Priety Zinta) to become a surrogate mother to their child. Yes, the prostitute formula works and by the way, surrogacy in this Bollywood saga does not involve medical intervention but relies on the usual primordial process to bear kids!

#3 Filhaal… (2001)

https://cinejuana.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/bollywoods-sur…s-on-surrogacy/, surrogacy in india, a surrogate mother, become a surrogate , being a surrogate , bollywood movies

Filhaal !

Finally a woman director on the topic of surrogacy– Meghna Gulzar. Two inseparable friends (Tabu, Susmita Sen) find themselves on crossroads with passage of time. Being a surrogate is not like savoring a piece of cake and  the girls find themselves in loggerhead when Susmita Sen decides to become a  surrogate mother as Tabu is unable to conceive for medical reasons. Not exactly a rockstar attempt yet definitely a mature  handling of the issue of surrogacy in India .

Please leave a comment if you know of any other movie (Hollywood, regional, World) which deals with the topic of surrogacy and surrogate mothers.

https://cinejuana.wordpress.com/2013/07/03/bollywood-mini…s-jab-we-met-2/, minimal movie poster, hot Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor movies, "tum se hi"

Hollywood Best Dialogues : Favourite Three!

Why a list on Hollywood Best Dialogues? Because Hollywood without  dialogues is  like soap without bubbles! Hence, without much bantering here I present my ever favorite three Hollywood dialogues !

#1

When you have to shoot, shoot, don’t talk.

How can one separate Hollywood Best Dialogues and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) directed by Sergio Leone ? The dialogue wows for its matter of fact execution flagging off an (un)intentionally(?) funny moment in the film!
https://cinejuana.wordpress.com/2013/06/29/hollywood-best…avourite-three/, Citizen Kane , When Harry Met Sally, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly , Hollywood Best Dialogues : Favourite Three

1.  The Good, the Bad and the Ugly   2. When Harry Met Sally   3.Citizen Kane

#2

I’ll have what she’s having.

This dialogue from When Harry Met Sally… (1989 ) in Hollywood Best Dialogues list is simply obvious 😉 After her demise at the age of 94 in the year 2008,  The New York Times said Estelle Reiner was  the woman “who delivered one of the most memorably funny lines in movie history.”

#3

Rosebud.

A list on Hollywood Best Dialogues without Citizen Kane‘s (1941) “Rosebud” is incomplete. Directed by and starring Orson Welles, “Rosebud” is filled with enigma and arguably remains one of the best dialogues ever scripted in Hollywood!

Drop in a comment to share  your favourite Hollywood dialogue(s).
