Indian medical fraternity must have cried in ‘happy-happy-joy-joy’ mode on discovering a gem in Shoojit Sircar and John Abraham’s social comedy Vicky Donor (2012) that revolved around the sensitive issue of sperm donation and infertility With stellar performances from Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam , Dolly Ahluwalia and Annu Kapoor an infotainment never appeared so sleek and appealing !
#1Full marks for dealing with a tabooed topic with such ease and dignity without sacrificing on the entertainment quotient , unlike, say Shyam Benegal‘s Hari-Bhari (2000), dealing with family planning, (I know its sacrilegious to bring out such a comparison, but the sociomedical nature of the film reminded me of it) which was too serious and documentary-like to find a mass appeal.
#2Unfortunately, virginity and sex are still intricately attached to the life and character of an Indian woman. Remember the scene where Yami Gautam comes clean about her ‘divorced’ past? Rings any bell? No?? Then click here
#3Vicky Donor‘s ending ! Way too unimaginative, conventional and tame !! Such an intricate excuse to justify ‘adopting’ one’s own biological baby ! [Interestingly it was a baby girl…hmmmm Save Girls?!]
Please feel free to lash out or appreciate.
